The Move of the Week
Saturday the 3rd: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park, free, then dinner on Balboa
Six free stages, a blanket, sunset at 6:51 over the last sets, then dinner in the Inner Richmond
Cost: Free, no tickets; dinner at The Richmond is the real spend
her kind of night ✓Richmond & Sunset
11:00 AMHardly Strictly Bluegrass, enter at Fulton St and 30th Ave — Saturday Oct 3. Gates 9 AM Sat–Sun, 11 AM Fri; music ends at 7 every day. Free, six stages across Hellman Hollow and Marx and Lindley Meadows. Enter at Fulton and 30th Ave or JFK Drive at Transverse. KQED's guide puts maps, parking and the bag policy on one page; read the bag policy before you pack the blanket and food. Two hours after gates the meadows are filling, so pick a meeting point at the entrance, not 'by the stage.'
11:00 AM–6:45 PM
Six stages: Banjo, Swan, Towers of Gold, Rooster, Arrow and Horseshoe Hill — 71 sets over three days. Mavis Staples, Los Lobos and My Morning Jacket are on the weekend bill (we haven't matched them to days). Pull the day's schedule from KQED's guide or the festival's own, pick two sets you both want, and mind the walk: six stages across three meadows, mapped in KQED's guide. Wander the rest.
6:51 PM
Sunset, with the last sets still going — Sunset 6:51 PM Saturday Oct 3, and music runs to 7, so the last sets play into dusk. The park's west end fogs over first; clear light only if the sky cooperates. Leave at 7 with everyone, or ten minutes early for a seat on the bus.
7:45 PMDinner at The Richmond, 615 Balboa St — Saturday dinner 6–11 PM per its listing; confirm when you book on OpenTable or at (415) 379-8988. Short seasonal Californian menu. About 1.8 miles east of Fulton and 30th, between 7th and 8th Ave: ride the 5 Fulton east along the park to 8th Ave, then walk two blocks north to Balboa. A 7:45 table gives you 45 minutes to escape the crowd, which is not generous. Book before Saturday.
Why it lands: A free festival is easy to say yes to: no ticket to coordinate, and if the day isn't working, nobody has wasted money. It also has a built-in shape. Arrive late morning, pick two sets together, wander between six stages, and the day ends at 7 on its own. After eight hours outside, a booked table across town is something to look forward to.
Weather backup: Sunday Oct 4 has the same 9 AM gates and 7 PM finish, with sunset about two minutes earlier; Friday's gates open at 11. No 7:45 table at The Richmond? Book later: Saturday dinner runs to 11. Or spend Sunday on the Castro play below.

More plays that week

A street fair at Castro and Market, then a dance set in a 1922 movie palace a block up
Cost: About $70 for two at Octo Octa; the fair is free, $10–20 suggested donation
her kind of night ✓Mission & Castro
2:00 PM52nd Castro Street Fair, 'Where We Belong,' Castro and Market — Sunday Oct 4 only, 11 AM–6 PM. Free; $10–20 suggested donation. Streets close around Castro and Market, so take Muni Metro to Castro Station, not a car. Arriving at 2 gives you three and a half hours. The Castro Art Mart is listed for 2–8 PM on Noe St between Market and Beaver, a block east: walk over if it's there, but don't plan around it.
5:30 PMOcto Octa, the Castro Street Fair after-party, Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St — Sunday Oct 4: doors 5:30, show 6, all ages. Tickets from about $35 on the theatre's own page; buy there, and before Sunday. The theatre is a block from Castro and Market, so leave the fair half an hour before it closes at 6 and walk in at doors.
Why it lands: The street fair is hours of easy company with plenty to look at, and no plan to settle on. The after-party is the ending you agreed to in advance: at 5:30 you walk one block and go inside. About $90 for two with the donation in the jar.
Weather backup: Can't do Sunday? The Castro Art Walk, Friday Oct 2, 5 to 8 PM, is free and covers the same few blocks (see the radar). If Octo Octa sells out, stay at the fair until it closes at 6 and eat on Castro St; Hardly Strictly also runs until 7 that day across town.
Saturday the 10th: the Fleet Week air show from Marina Green, then dinner on Green Street
Four hours on the grass under the Blue Angels, then cocktails and dinner in the old Spaghetti Factory
Cost: Free on Marina Green; dinner at Equal Parts is the only spend
her kind of night ✓Marina & North Beach
11:00 AMStake out grass on Marina Green — Saturday Oct 10. Air show noon–4 PM Fri–Sun, Oct 9–11, with the Blue Angels headlining. Marina Green is a standard viewing spot, so arrive an hour early, not at noon. Bring a blanket, layers and water, and check the Fleet Week calendar that morning.
12:00–4:00 PM
The air show, overhead — Four hours, free, and you don't need all of them. Leave early and you might miss the Blue Angels; that's the price of beating the crowd out. If you came for the ships, the Parade of Ships was Friday the 9th at 11 AM.
5:30 PMDinner at Equal Parts, 478 Green St, North Beach — Saturday: open 11 AM–2 AM, brunch to 2:30, dinner 4–9:30, late-night menu 10–11:30 (we checked). New American and a cocktail bar in the old Spaghetti Factory building, between Grant and Kearny. Book on its site or OpenTable, or walk in for the bar; expect it full right after the show. About two miles from Marina Green: walk east past Fort Mason and Aquatic Park, then up Columbus (about 45 minutes), or take the 30 Stockton from Chestnut St. Sunset is 6:40 PM.
Why it lands: An air show is a good first-hours date: side by side, looking up at something loud and impressive, with gaps between passes to talk. The walk to North Beach gets you out of the crowd and gives you a stretch to talk properly. A bar open until 2 means the evening runs as long as you both want.
Weather backup: The air show also runs Friday and Sunday, noon to 4. Sunday's catch: the Italian Heritage Parade starts in North Beach at 12:30, so you'll choose between it and the first half of the show (see the radar). If the Green is too crowded, Fleet Fest at Pier 27 is free, 9 to 5, Saturday and Sunday, on the other side of the northern waterfront.
